Music Review by Brent Linton
Colin James, Limelight (MapleMusic Recordings)
Rating: 8 (out of 10)
Canadian blues veteran Colin James is back to his roots on Limelight, a mature and finessed disc. It’s been a interesting
career to watch from humble beginnings in Saskatchewan, leaving home as a teenager to pursue a music career, several down and out years living the dream, a name change (Munn to James) and then hard earned success with his 1988 debut that produced the single Why’d You Lie. Throughout his recording career James has continuously taken chances that have led him away from being a traditional pop star and more of a working musician striving to grow. On Limelight, his ninth recording, James shows a command of rhythm and blues, soul, rock ’n’ roll and, of course, the blues. James has brought along a lot of friends on this disc, notably fellow Canadian legend Colin Linden, who plays, sings and writes with James. The disc has a generous 14 tracks with 10 originals including the soulful title track. James embraces the considerable task of covering two Van Morrison cuts — It Fills You Up and Into The Mystic — with great effect and adds a scorching version of Bob Dylan’s Watchin’ The River Flow.
